Description

My half of the trade with :iconbladebandit:.
If you haven't seen her art before, go right fucking now.

This took me forever, because for awhile, I hated it and was frustrated. I don't know what broke that...I think it was a mixture of playing with textures and blending options, messing with the colors and setting a bit and then I got to a point where I am decently happy. I'm abnormally proud of that tree, and I've tried a few different shading options that don't involve the use of the smudge tool which is making my life less irritating.

This is =bladebandit's lovely Taima, enjoying a nice autumn evening as the sun slowly begins to set. This just seemed the perfect setting for her (and for the current season!) since her information said she's wild, in tune with all things natural and nimble.

Her lovely half:

"Raise your head
Autumn's child
You sweet young thing
Stay dead horse
Stand dead horse
Run river run
Sun shine sun
Sing child sing
Sing your song"

To be honest I feel like a bit of a prat writing a critique, but here goes...

I'd say this about sums up everything I like about your style. The sky, and the angle at which the viewer is looking at it, is very skillfully done and the reflected colors in the grass are a very fitting touch to really sell it. The curve of the horizon line really creates an interesting lead upward. The composition is really my favorite aspect of this, though. The viewer enters the frame from the left tree, moves through the horse, and up the slope and into the sky.

Another point of this painting that I feel has not been pointed out in the comments is that the character blends into the background near perfectly. The horse, in this case, is rendered in the same style as the setting and it makes it look much less contrived and more like a real scene. You've officially lost that horrible "digital" look that we digital artists are always trying to lose (oh, the irony...).

To top it off, there's a lot of eye candy in this piece: the separate locks of hair in the mane and tail and the little twists in the tree branches are very skillfully done.

I think some details could have been strengthened, such as the autumn leaves on the background tree being a little too...thin and transparent. The horse is also without a shadow, and the tree it's standnig on would probably benefit from the same kind of rich shadows you gave to the tree in the background. The grass around the roots of the tree is very good in that it does not look like the photoshop brush, but seems a little think on the ground, since I can see the clear line between the roots of the tree and the base color of the ground between the individual clumps of grass.

Overall though, this piece serves to really highlight your skills as an artist. o.o; I'm in awe.
