P E R S O N A L I T Y;


ARTISTIC;
Karthwine has what many would describe as a morbid sense of style. His home is decorated in the theme of "collecting", an affectionate name for "organized hoarding". He will pick up and keep anything he believes he can repurpose or use in an art project. His main artistic outlet is taxidermy, enjoying the subtleties of creating the illusion of life after death. He also creates paintings, his favorite color to use being plum purple and indigo. He will turn anything around him into art in his spare time, finding beauty in anything slightly strange. His father sells his work in his shop with some success.

SUPERSTITIOUS;
As he always believes that his nightmares have some sort of meaning, he is particularly superstitious about the world around him. Working in a funeral home he believes he has caught glimpses of wisps, souls passing on from this life to the next. The only time Karthwine has ever yelled is when a colleague attempted to chase the birds out of the rafters of the funeral home, telling them that they would "interrupt the passageways". The colleague did not ask questions, hurried away and no one mentioned the birds again. Karthwine will often leave out breadcrumbs for them, and calls to them affectionately. He also wears a leather band with four silver bells his father crafted for him on his right foreleg at all times, believing this to bring him luck and ward him from any negative spirits.

NERVOUS;
His nightmares have had a lasting effect on his day to day life, and have caused him to operate at high levels of anxiety even when awake. This constant anxiousness has impacted his ability to communicate effectively and he struggles with maintaining positive social situations. He prefers to work alone and has channeled his nervous energy into focusing on his studies, work and art. He is constantly striving to do the best job he is able to do in every aspect of his life and is very hard on himself when he experiences even minor failures. He is not a fan of silence and prefers to hear music or light background noise. He will seek out noises such as a trickle of water, wind, small animal sounds or the bells on his leg that lightly chime. Karthwine does not like changes to his routine as he has found this to lead to more intense and vivid nightmares.

CAREFUL;
A workaholic, he will not rest until the job is done to his own perfectionist standards. Every move is calculated and thought through as diligently as possible. He is not good at thinking on the fly or doing anything "spur of the moment", preferring to attack every task with a plan, even planning for every eventuality no matter how unlikely. He doesn't like surprises, nor does he have any interest in going on epic adventures or trying anything deemed remotely dangerous. This can lead him to pass on some great opportunities. He is very meticulous in how he completes tasks both in his work and hobbies, focusing on the most minute of details. 

SINCERE;
Karthwine is one to wear his emotions on his sleeve, and does not engage in deceptions or lies. He is honest, upfront and expects the same from others, leading to him being perhaps a tad too trusting (even naïve).  He will always take the sincerest path, even if it is the harder one with more obstacles. 

CURIOUS;
He is always seeking knowledge, hungry for it. Any and all aspects of knowledge he will consume at an alarming rate. He reads as much as possible, focusing mainly on non-fiction and medical texts, but enjoys the high fantasy genre. He has a near insatiable curiosity for the world around him and understanding how it all works while also revealing in its mysteries and magics. The arcane is just as intriguing to him as science, and he believes working with both of these elements together will provide the best explanations to how the universe functions.

GENERAL HISTORY;
Before Karthwine was born, his mother and father had a falling out with his grandparents. Both Ella and Nairo were raised in strictly traditional families. They met at school and became fast friends, realizing over time that the two of them both of them, while still traditional, wanted to break from the ridgid ways of their families without being seen as becoming members of the Kawaru. Ella's mother and father had arranged a marriage for her, but as she grew with Nairo she knew she wanted to spend her life with him. Ella and Nairo got married, and when Ella's parents Ida and Caleb found out, they estranged their daughter. Nairo's parents, Amelia and Alister, allowed the couple to stay at their home for a time - albeit begrudgingly. The young couple was uncomfortable with the pressure of traditions, and ultimately ended up moving far from both of their childhood homes. Ella pursued her dream of becoming a healer and Nairo found success in running a modest shop dealing mainly in incense, candles, and tokens to offer at the Gods' Shrines. He was particularly fond of crafting small birds out of various materials as offerings to Argus, and his unique creations were popular with travellers during the festival periods. 

Ella and Nairo had trouble conceiving Karthwine. They prayed diligently to Alya for several years before eventually Ella found herself with child. Overjoyed at their son's arrival, they doted on him as much as they were able to within their income. They were both very attentive parents and Nairo could often be found in his workshop crafting toys for his son. The birth of Karthwine repaired somewhat the broken connection to Nairo and Ella's family, Nairo's parents being the more forgiving of the two. The relationship with Ella's parents would remain strained, and during Karthwine's childhood he only saw Grandma Ida and Grandpa Caleb on a handful of holidays.

Around age 3, Karthwine started having night terrors. The cause remains unknown. During these terrors, he would thrash and scream for hours during the night. Nairo learned quickly not to touch him during the terrors, as once he tried to calm his son down and Karthwine released bloodcurdling screams, recoiling in imagined pain. His parents ended up setting up a place within the home lined with soft pillows they could corral him into until the terrors passed, ordinarily within 2-4 hours. Some nights were more sleepless than others. 

As he grew and entered school, the night terrors subsided but were replaced by frequent nightmares. He would no longer scream throughout the night, but his dreams were so vivid and terrifying he would often wake up in tears and cold sweats. Most often these nightmares center around death, both his own and those that he loves and he always remembers them in vivid detail. When the nightmares are at their worst, he will wake up in a state of semi-lucid dreaming and be unable to distinguish reality from the dream. The longest this period has lasted was over an hour, but in general will fade after 15 minutes. He has never truly known a good night's sleep and will avoid sleeping as long as possible, on average getting only around 3-4 hours of rest. Despite this, he manages to do well in school, choosing to spend his waking hours hyper focused on studying and scanning for any tricks he could use to rid himself of his vivid dreaming. During his school years he prayed diligently to Argus with his parents, begging for an answer from the God, or for a blessing for respite from his nightmares.

After years with no change, Karthwine began to lose his faith in Argus. While not an atheist, he felt his connection and interest in the god weakend and a bitterness began to rest in his heart. He stopped attending the festivals, instead focusing wholeheartedly on his studies. He remembered when, at 7 years old, his parents took him to visit Nariah and Argus's Shrine. He had felt nothing but wonder and awe, but by the time he was leaving school at 13 he could remember the event with only disappointment. When he left school his attentions were on science and following in his mother's footsteps by pursuing a career in healing. Ella was happy to apprentice her son.

Around the age of 18, after 5 years of apprenticing with his mother and mainly working with physical therapy, he took off to university for a more in depth knowledge of the medical field. He did not feel comfortable working with his mother's patients and felt his potential wasted on attempting to follow in her footsteps. His nightmares continued, but now he channeled the pain of them into forms of morbid art - particularly taxidermy and odd paintings often centered around dark magics. Once, after a particularly long stretch of insomnia  and dreams that burned his heart, he built a kirin out of sticks and bones. Horrified by his own creation, and at the prospect of being found and condemned as a member of the Kawaru, he smashed it to pieces and wept. 

During university Karthwine struggled socially, meeting only a few handful of acquaintances who quickly drifted off to larger social circles. After his second year and having studied many different aspects of the medical professions, he settled easily on mortuary science. This was something he was able to combine his love of science, medicine and art into effectively. When he graduated from university, he became employed at his local funeral home. He found himself able to be of comfort to grieving families without having to use many words and enjoyed the reverent act of preparing the body for a proper burial, offering the soul up to its new journey. His favorite of all the burial methods is a water burial, as the sound of the water is calming to him, and he will often offer a small token he has crafted personally to the family for placement on the raft of their loved one. 

And here our story starts...

GOALS & MOTIVATIONS;
- Interested in the arcane and combining this with his knowledge of sciences. A lifelong goal is to experience healthy, dreamless sleep and will pursue any means necessary to accomplish this.
- Has a secret dark desire to visit the Lost Shrine, but he would never admit it to anyone - he is barely able to acknowledge it within himself. He currently does not have the courage to embark on the journey, and has a desperate fear of getting caught at the location.
- While not particularly interested in marriage or children, he has occasionally day dreamed of having a relationship though is afraid of the long term consequences of his insomnia and dreams on his partner.
